We're off to kindergarten!

If you have a kindergartner, or preschooler, you absolutely, MUST have this book to read together in preparation the BIG day!

Sydney is starting kindergarten this year. I am full of mixed emotions. Mournful and nervous, of course, but SO excited about starting school all over again! There is so much I never learned or have long forgotten. I can't wait to rediscover it all again with my kids. Things like the scientific names of clouds, and recognizing seeds.

I looooove Rosemary Wells. I knew this book would be GOLDEN, and it is! She really captures the world of learning through the eyes of a 5 year old. Everything they will learn their first year in school, is outlined in order of the months of the school calendar year, through poetry, adorable illustrations, stories, and songs. Science, art, music, language, holidays, and social skills are all highlighted in creative ways. It's adooooooorable! Here are some of my favorite parts:

This is a sample of the November poem that I love, love, love!

Our Tree

What will we call the schoolyard tree?
Otto has an idea.
"Doris O'Maple" seems right to us all.
She's ours for the rest of the year.

Doris O'Maple's a beautiful tree.

Her leaves have turned yellow and red.

I sit on her branch and pretend

I'm in France.

The colors have gone to my head.

The kids adopt a great-granny.

"We sing songs, listen to stories, and learn things
like making a cat's cradle.
Each week we bring a present.
My adopted great-granny is almost a hundred years old.
She has forgotten her name.
She and I pick a new one.
We decided on Starlight."

I want to adopt a great-granny! I think my kids and I will do this. What a brilliant idea!

Here is a poem, perfect to ease your little one's anxiety over the new change in their life.

The Night Before the First Day of School

Tomorrow is the first day of kindergarten.
What will I do? What will it be like?
Everything will be for the first time!
I tell Mama I am scared to go.
We sing our favorite song:

Star light, Star bright,

First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might
Have the wish I wish tonight.

"You are my little star," says Mama.

This book sounds really cute! I'll have to remember for when Laney gets there.

I am going to pick this book up for Julia's birthday! Just in time for kindergarten! I am going through the same emotions about Julia going! I didn't cry when Emma went because I was so excited to have a kindergartener but now I realize how fast they grow up and so this time I may shed a few tears!

I do have this book. Bella's aunt sent it, even though she's only 3. But she loves it already.
